The history of the Department of Mathematics dates back to the establishment of the Evening School of Engineering in Lublin in 1953. Initially, there was only one mathematician, Professor Adam Bielecki, PhD, but in February 1954, Stanisław Dobrzycki, MSc, began working full-time and took charge of organizing mathematical life at the Faculty of Engineering. During this time, mathematics was also taught by lecturers from UMCS: Associate Professor Konstanty Radziszewski, PhD, and Urszula Hirszfeld, MSc.

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Evening School of Engineering was established in 1964. It included, among others, the Mathematics Laboratory, organized by Stanisław Dobrzycki, MSc. The university offered evening and part-time studies in three faculties: Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Electrical Engineering. Mathematics classes were taught throughout the university by faculty from the Mathematics Laboratory of the Faculty of Engineering. and mathematicians employed on a contract basis. In 1965, the Evening Engineering School was transformed into the Higher School of Engineering, and full-time studies were launched in all faculties. The number of students, and consequently the number of teaching classes at the university, increased significantly. New mathematicians were also hired at that time. The Mathematics Laboratory was transformed into the Mathematics Team in 1966, and Dr. Barbara Piłatowa was then entrusted with the Team's leadership.

The Mathematics Team members taught full-time, evening, and part-time courses at all faculties of the University of Engineering, wrote course scripts and methodological guides for part-time students. They also held management positions at the university and were members of the Senate. Most mathematicians were active in the Lublin Branch of the Polish Mathematical Society and the Lublin Scientific Society. In July 1968, Barbara Piłat, the only employee of the Mathematics Group with a doctoral degree, was appointed to the position of associate professor. In 1968, Maria Bojarska, M.A., was hired and organized a computing machine laboratory within the Mathematics Group at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering. Students initially worked on analog machines, and later on the Odra 1013 digital machine. This was the beginning of the Computing Center at WSInż. In the following years, the Mathematics Group, along with the reorganized university, underwent further changes. Renamed the Subject Group of Applied Mathematics and then the Department of Applied Mathematics, it constituted a unit of the Interfaculty Institute of Organization and Management. From 1973 to 1977, the department, with over 30 members, was headed by Dr. Stanisław Kuś. When the university obtained the status of Lublin University of Technology in 1977, the Department of Applied Mathematics was transferred to the then-established Interfaculty Institute of Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry, within whose structure it remained until 1984, when it was reincorporated into the Faculty of Electrical Engineering. During this period, the Department was headed by Dr. Franciszek Jabłoński.

In 1985, the Lublin University of Technology hired the outstanding mathematician, Professor Jan Kisyński, PhD, DSc, who took over the Department of Applied Mathematics at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering.

The employment of Professor Jan Kisyński at the Lublin University of Technology in 1985 enabled the transformation of the Department of Applied Mathematics, which had over 30 employees, into the Department of Mathematics, under the supervision of Professor. In 1988, the department was transferred to the Faculty of Management and Fundamentals of Technology. Three years later, a new department was separated from the Department of Mathematics - Applied Mathematics under the direction of Assoc. Prof. Zdzisław Grodzki. The Department of Mathematics under Professor J. Kisyński, initially staffed by 20 people, conducted classes at all Faculties of the University of Technology. In October 1993, seven employees of the department moved to the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering to the newly established Department of Applied Mathematics, which was entrusted, after he obtained his habilitation, to Assoc. Prof. L. Koczan. In February 1994, another division of the Department of Mathematics took place. The Department of Mathematics and Engineering Geometry, established at the Faculty of Civil and Sanitary Engineering and headed by Assoc. Prof. Waldemar Cieślak. Four faculty members left the PL, and the Department of Mathematics was simultaneously transferred from the Faculty of Technology and Technology to the Faculty of Electrical Engineering. Thus, through transformations lasting from 1991 to 1994, four departments of mathematics were established in each faculty of the university, headed by independent researchers. Professor Jan Kisyński headed the Department of Mathematics for 18 years, until September 30, 2003. After the Professor reached retirement age, the duties of the department head were entrusted to Assoc. Prof. Adam Bobrowski.

Since March 2021, the Department head has been Assoc. Prof. Zbigniew Łagodowski.
