The agreement on the creation of the "Łęczyński Cluster of Energy" was signed on February 17, 2023 on the premises of the Bogdanka Coal Mine. On behalf of the University, the document was signed by Prof. Dariusz Czerwiński, Vice-Rector for General Affairs and Development.
The cluster connects entities from the research and development sphere, representatives of business and local government units. It is composed of nine entities: the Bogdanka Coal Mine, Lublin University of Technology, Łęczyńska Power Engineering, the Łęczyński County, the Town of Łęczna, Cyców, Milejów, Ludwin, Puchaczów and Spiczyn.
Tomasz Drzał, managing director of the National Chamber of Energy and RES Clusters, author of the Cluster's strategy, talks about the idea of "Łęczyński Cluster of Energy". – The “Energy Cluster” is nothing more than an economic ecosystem at the local level. It is here, close to us, that we can build an energy community that will firstly ensure local energy security, and secondly, shorten the supply chains of this energy, and thus create a certain well-being for us, as the inhabitants of this region.
The consortium's task is to ensure the energy security of the local community and to create a self-sufficient energy area that uses clean and environmentally friendly energy resources. The idea of the Cluster is also the implementation of innovative solutions in the energy sector and the improvement of the competitiveness of the entities forming the Cluster, as well as the creation of the region that is open to the development of clean technologies, which will significantly improve the health and life of local residents.
– As a leader in business efficiency, we focus on solutions that allow us to combine cost and production optimization with a positive impact on the environment. Energy from renewable energy sources will allow both the Company and its partners in the Cluster to reduce emissions, but also to stimulate regional development. Because in the longer term, energy from renewable energy sources, its storage or the production of components itself, create an opportunity to generate new jobs for the inhabitants of the Lublin region - emphasizes Kasjan Wyligała, President of the Management Board of the Bogdanka Coal Mine.
The participation of Lublin University of Technology in the Cluster is a great honor for the University.
– As the only technical university in the region, we have specialist knowledge, a modern laboratory base and instruments to support innovation and technology transfer. Thanks to this, we will be an excellent scientific base for local communities, using our potential to develop our economy - says Prof. Zbigniew Pater, Rector of LUT. And he adds: - Both the research conducted at Lublin University of Technology in the field of distributed and renewable energy, as well as the fields of study, such as renewable energy engineering, or power engineering – the field of study which is being planned - perfectly fit into the Cluster's activities.
What are the tasks ahead of LUT?
– Lublin University of Technology is to perform several functions in the Cluster. One of them is to help in the analysis of electricity flows in individual entities. We are also to support the Cluster in the area of modern technologies related to the transmission and storage of electricity. In addition, our scientists will be able to conduct training in modern technologies related to electricity, heat or data analytics, which is necessary for the proper functioning of a large enterprise or an entity such as the Cluster - informs Prof. Dariusz Czerwiński.
